Running milestone juni 25, 2006

This morning I woke up at 8.15 to do my Sunday morning run. Even though I didn’t sleep too well I still felt good enough to do some heavy exercise. Because I skipped running last Thursday I felt I needed to do some extra time so I set my mind to 1 hour.

After a quick warming up I started on a reasonable pace that kept my heart rate between 160 and 165. I was able to keep my heart rate under 165 for quite some time and I felt good. After about 40 minutes my heart rate went up to around 170 but I was able to keep it just under most of the time.

I reached home clocking in at 58 minutes. Not too shabby considering that I had never ran more that 40 minutes before. The total distance turned out to be 7.5 kilometer.

Next time I’m going to try running a bit faster so I can do 8 plus kilometers. But for now I’m quite proud of myself.

Arranging visa juni 24, 2006

On May 25th Li's sister applied for the visa for herself and her parents to be able to join our wedding in August.

Knowing the Dutch Immigration Services' (IND) procedures we were afraid that they might not get the approval on time. However, on the 3rd of June we received 3 envelopes from the IND with forms (12 pages!) that had to be filled in and a request to send a copy of my contract, passport and 3 most recent salary slips. We returned the 3 heavy envelopes on June 7th, hoping for a quick response.

Yesterday the Dutch Embassy in Beijing, sent us an email informing that the visa were approved. Needless to say we were very relieved. With the fickleness of the IND you just never know.

Running and losing weight juni 22, 2006

Back in december 2005 I was completely shocked by how much I weighed. It shouldn’t have been too much of a shock because I knew I was getting heavier and heavier. But checking in at 105 kilograms really opened my eyes. I needed to get off my lazy ass and start doing some sports.

Not being particularly interested in group sports or going to a gym I picked running as the sport of choice. Running is something anyone can do and, besides proper shoes and clothing, doesn’t require any special equipment. At first I wanted to buy cheap shoes because I wasn’t sure if I would be determined enough to keep running for a longer period of time. But being as heavy as I was I knew I needed to have proper shoes anyway. Taking the professional advice from a runningshop I bought €140 pair of Adidas shoes. The shop also provided me a running schedule fit for any beginner.

On januari 2nd I started with the schedule. The first week was simple as I only had to walk for 30, 40 and 45 minutes. But the second week already proved to be a challenge with running 12 times one minute. It doesn’t sound like a whole lot but it actually is for someone who hasn’t done any sports for years

As my schedule slowly increased the running time every week I started to feel more comfortable running. And I have now reached the point where I can run for 35-40 minutes with reasonable ease. As far as distance goes, I can do 5 kilometes in 35 minutes. OK, so that won’t win me any races. But that’s not what it’s all about for me. Yet! Eventually I would like to be able to run 10 kilometers within one hour but that is not going to happen in the near future.

For now I’m going to increase the amount of time that I run and stick with my current pace, which is about 8.5 km/h. What I need to do first is lose more weight. Having lost 10 kilograms over the past 5 months I’m now weighing 95, which I think is still too much for running at a faster pace. Once weight is going to drop below 90 kilograms I’m going to experiment with speed.

Besides having a better physical condition and less weight to carry around I’m also quite enjoying running, especially on Sunday mornings when I get up at 8.30am to go out for a run.
